Decision allows salmon farming to continue in Macquarie Harbour

The Minister confirmed the 2012 referral decision on the Macquarie Harbour Marine Farming Expansion, responding to three requests to reconsider that decision, received in 2023. The decision was made in accordance with amendments to the national environment law that came into effect on 28 March 2025. “Today’s decision allows for the continuation of salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour, Minister Watt said.

“When making this decision, all relevant information was carefully considered. “The Albanese Government remains committed to the protection of the Maugean skate, including through our funding of oxygenation measures in Macquarie Harbour. "The original decision includes measures to ensure there are no significant impacts to the Maugean skate or the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.” We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.

We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
