Kilmore, a rapidly growing town in Northern Victoria with a population of over 12,000 residents, is projected to double by 2046. Despite this growth, the town still has no public high school. The Mitchell Shire Council has listed a local high school as a top priority since before the 2022 state election and reaffirmed its commitment for the upcoming 2026 campaign.

Currently, students must travel to Broadford or Wallan—both nearing capacity—or attend the private Assumption College, which is unaffordable for many families. Reports indicate that some students spend up to two hours commuting daily, often facing overcrowded buses or being left behind at stops. Tyrrell said these long commutes impact students’ mental health, family time, and participation in local activities.

Some families have even resorted to homeschooling or relocating for better access to education. She urged the government to fund the Kilmore High School master plan, ensuring students have fair and local access to quality education and opportunities where they live. Do you like this page?
