Joint media release: More funding to tackle yellow crazy ants in FNQ

MP, Member for Leichhardt As part of the 2026-27 Budget, the Albanese Government is providing an additional $6 million over the next two years to continue the fight against invasive yellow crazy ants in Queensland’s Wet Tropics. The funding will help protect the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area’s biodiversity and heritage values and detect and treat yellow crazy ant infestations in the Cairns region.

Listed as one of the world's 100 worst invasive species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, yellow crazy ants are a major threat to native species and ecosystems and the industries that rely on them. Queensland’s Wet Tropics is particularly vulnerable because its warm and humid climate makes for ideal habitat for the ants. The Wet Tropics Management Authority has been recognised globally as a leader in invasive ant management and has declared more than 1200 hectares free of yellow crazy ants, including 63 hectares within the World Heritage Area.

This new funding builds on an initial Albanese Government investment of $24.8 million in 2022-23, aimed at preventing the spread in the Wet Tropics and controlling outbreaks in the Townsville region. The Townsville program continues to be funded through the earlier investment, which will see $2.9 million used over the next 12 months.
