Maiden speeches set the tone of a new MP's term in Parliament, and our people delivered some strong messages starting with leader Cory Bernardi. "People are sick of being fed a steady diet of tasteless vegan political tofu and being told it's tasty eye fillet, and really good for them. They want their country back and I want to give it back to them, starting right here in South Australia." One for the ages!
Cory also sparked a childish tantrum by the Greens, who walked out of the chamber when he started talking about transgender extremism. "The media are silent, while the government allows doctors to mutilate children in the name of gender-affirming care." We sincerely hope the Greens managed to find a 'safe space' somewhere while Cory was laying down some uncomfortable facts.
Our people had some interesting stories to tell. Chantelle Thomas spoke of long hours on campaign trail in Narungga and a proud mum moment when her five-year-old daughter remarked "well, that was rude" when a resident shut the door in their face. David Paton, the Member for Ngadjuri, revealed he had survived two appalling accidents which should have killed him.
That he was able to stand up in Parliament at all - alive and whole - is a miracle. Jason Virgo - who has stood up for farmers in MacKillop against Labor's attempt to destroy their land and water table with fracking - told the tale of his stint as a security guard the Christmas Island detention centre. Robert Roylance, the Member for Hammond, spoke of his time as an English teacher in communist China, and how he found his Chistian faith when encountering members of the underground church.
Carlos Quaremba did not hold back at all, talking about the culture differences he experienced as a kid from Argentina growing up in Melbourne and his time on the Victor Harbor council. He sent a strong warning to councils in South Australia that his priority was to force much-needed reforms in 'rotten to the core' local government. Rebecca Hewett will deliver her maiden speech next month.
