The Adelaide Park Lands are home to vulnerable and threatened species, including the grey-headed flying-fox. The destruction of trees at Possum Park has been met with fierce community backlash. Further trees are planned for the chop in preparation for the newly-proposed MotoGP race.
The proposed 4.1 km track is adjacent to fragile wetlands home to native bird life and aquatic species. The Greens are calling for Federal Minister for Environment and Water Murray Watt to be proactive in requiring a referral to be made by the SA Government to ensure that SA national heritage places and vulnerable native wildlife are protected. Lines attributable to Greens Senator for South Australia Barbara Pocock: “Malinauskas is taking a wrecking ball to SA heritage.
There is a clear track record of disregard for our heritage and precious native species. “Labor's plans to erode the Adelaide Park Lands have no end. First the North Adelaide Golf Course, next the MotoGP.
“We are witnessing the cumulative impact of multiple assaults on our precious park lands. Labor has failed at the state and federal level to use their powers to protect heritage and nature. “The Adelaide Park Lands provide essential habitat for our native species.
These trees are now gone. Our politicians have failed to protect our vulnerable and endangered species. “Our wildlife are having their habitats shredded.
They will suffer from increased pollution, fumes and noise pollution. “We’ve seen thousands of South Australians protesting on the front steps of Parliament House, standing up for nature and our heritage. I don’t see people advocating for destruction.
There's no sign of people rallying in support of this. “There's a safer, less destructive place for this car race at the Bend, not our pristine park lands. “Federal Minister Watt must use his powers where Premier Malinauskas has refused to do so.
Federal and SA Labor are backing each other on failing to protect our heritage and nature and failing South Australians.” MEDIA CONTACT Charlotta Lomas - 0466 339 862 Facebook for the Australian Greens YouTube for the Australian Greens X for the Australian Greens Instagram for the Australian Greens Bluesky for the Australian Greens Privacy Members website Your safety Contact us Our plan Tax the 1% Tackle the cost of living Healthcare for all Fix the housing crisis Strong climate action In your language 2025 policy platform Policy principles & aims Our team Federal MPs State/territory MPs Officeholders Federal portfolios Federal media releases Take action Volunteer Donate Issues & campaigns Upcoming events Greens Shop Leave a bequest Green Magazine All news Our movement About the Greens Become a member Jobs Members website State/territory parties Contact us The Greens acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.
