Joint media release: Official sod turn on breakthrough $113.2 million water infrastructure project in Western Port
Senator for Victoria, Lisa Darmanin attended a sod turning event to mark the official start of construction of the Western Port Recycled Water Scheme. Once complete, the scheme will provide up to 4,000 million litres a year of Class A high quality recycled water to local farmers. As Victoria’s population grows, investment in a greater mix of water sources, such as recycled water, will be vital to keep up with demand.
Using recycled water for irrigation provides a reliable water source for local vegetable growers while reducing their reliance on local waterways, which are increasingly affected by climate change. The creation of a new approximately 49 km recycled water distribution pipeline has begun and will supply local farms in Pakenham South, Cora Lynn, Vervale, Catani, Iona, Garfield, Bayles, and Tynong.
Connected customers should start receiving recycled water from 2028. The project is anticipated to generate a $104 million increase in gross regional output and create more than 90 jobs across the construction and the agricultural sectors. The production of Class A recycled water locally at Pakenham Water Recycling Plant helps to preserve our precious drinking water supply and improves climate resilience for our key local industries.
The construction phase of the $113.2 million project has been made possible with $46.6 million of investment from the Australian Government’s National Water Grid Fund and $66.6 million from South East Water. The Western Port Recycled Water Scheme was kickstarted thanks to project support and funding from the Victorian Government’s Integrated Water Management Program.
