Game-changing upgrades for Lameroo Sports Club
Women and girls in the Mallee region now have the facilities to match their sporting goals, thanks to the Albanese Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program. The Lameroo Sports Club received more than $731,000 to transform its sporting precinct through Play Our Way. It now boasts a brand-new netball and basketball court , fully lit and fenced, giving local athletes a safe, high-quality space to train and compete day or night.
Complementing the court is the newly built Mallee Community Movement Centre, which includes an indoor community gym, toilets, changing rooms, storage space and a first-aid room. The Albanese Government’s $200 million Play Our Way grant program supports local initiatives to overcome barriers that women and girls face in participating in sport. This includes providing safe, inclusive, quality and sustainable facilities, equipment and initiatives to help women and girls to stay involved in sport and physical activity for life.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport, Anika Wells: “Play Our Way is making sure women and girls have every opportunity to play the sports they love. “Safe and inclusive amenities can make a huge difference in a female athlete’s experience, and that’s exactly what the Albanese Government is delivering. “The Mallee Community Movement Centre will give locals a place to come together, get active and enjoy the sports they love.” Quotes attributable to Senator for Victoria, Jana Stewart: "As somebody who grew up in regional Victoria, I know how much having a proper place to train and compete means to young women and girls.
These facilities are exactly what Lameroo has always deserved.” "The Albanese Labor Government delivers for regional communities because where you grow up shouldn't determine what you have access to. That's what this investment is all about. "Women and girls in the Mallee deserve world-class facilities.
That's exactly what Lameroo is getting." Quotes attributable to Lameroo Sports Club Project Coordinator, Nicole McMahon: “Lameroo’s new community gym and our upgraded netball and basketball facilities represent far more than new infrastructure; they are a powerful investment in the future of our region. “In rural communities like ours, opportunities can be limited, so when we have the chance to build something that strengthens participation, connection and wellbeing, we make the absolute most of it.
“We are deeply grateful for the Australian Government’s Play Our Way funding, which has ensured women and girls can maximise their involvement in netball, grow their participation in basketball, and, just as importantly, benefit from the inclusive opportunities our new community gym will provide for those who may not be able to take part in traditional sports.
“These facilities are a testament to what happens when a rural community dreams big, works together, and refuses to let distance limit opportunity. We couldn’t be prouder.”
