Milestone reached for Flinders Medical Centre expansion

Media event date: 12 June 2026 Date published: 12 June 2026 Media type: Media release General public A major expansion of Flinders Medical Centre being delivered in partnership between the Federal and South Australia Governments, has reached a significant milestone ahead of schedule, and is on track for completion in 2028. The Australian and South Australian Governments are each investing $249 million in the project to build a new Flinders Medical Centre Acute Services Building delivering expanded medical services and an additional 98 beds.

The project, has reached ‘Topping out’ stage, which was due for final completion in May 2027, and signifies the completion of the highest point of the building's structural frame. The Acute Services Building will include: a day surgery admissions area an 18 same-day bed medical day unit four new operating theatres and recovery areas, including a new 'hybrid theatre' to support increased access to angiography services in house an Eye Surgery Clinic including two ophthalmology operating theatres and associated consultation spaces a 16 bed 'satellite' Intensive Care Unit and supporting CT scanner, and two 32 bed adult inpatient units.

In 2022, the Australian Government committed to partnering with the South Australian Government to deliver a once-in a generation upgrade to the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide’s south. Expansion works for this project have already delivered the following: 20 new beds at Flinders Medical Centre for an Older Persons Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) Unit and Residential Care Outreach Team (RCOT) 32 new bed older persons unit at the Repat Health Precinct, comprising a 26-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit; and a 6-bed Complex and Restorative service a new MRI and CT suite at the Flinders Medical Centre; and major upgrade and expansion of the Margaret Tobin Centre for mental health at Flinders Medical Centre.
