Joint media release: Community sporting clubs kicking goals on climate action
Under the $50m program, up to 500 community sports clubs will be supported to upgrade their facilities to be more energy efficient and climate resilient, future-proofing local clubs. Sporting clubs can apply for one-off grants of between $25,000 and $100,000 to fund upgrades from efficient ACs and better drainage systems to solar panel and battery installations – bringing bills down while making their facilities more resilient to a changing climate.
Clubs will be able to reinvest bill savings into the things that matter most to their communities – like funding new equipment, girls' participation programs, and pathways for young athletes and officials. Sport Forever, led by Cricket for Climate Ltd, has been appointed as the Round 1 Program Support Provider. Through Sport Forever grant applicants and recipients will be able to access expert support and guidance to support their proposals and projects.
Round 1 of the program opens today and will deliver upgrades worth $17.6 million. That’s why our Government is delivering upgrades to keep their bills down and help them adapt to a changing climate. “This practical action on climate will ensure that our kids are able to keep playing for decades to come, so clubs spend less on bills and more on equipment and programs that will keep future generations happy and healthy.” Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson: “Upgrading sporting facilities will protect local community facilities that are used around the country by Australians who participate in community sport, while empowering clubs and communities to seize the potential of the cleaner, cheaper energy transformation.
“The changing climate is already impacting the way we play and enjoy sport, so it is only right that we support club facilities to respond to the new weather extremes.” Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport, Anika Wells: “Community sport is where our stars of the future start their journey and that’s why we’re backing it through programs like this which builds on our commitment to grassroots sport, with participation programs including Play Well, Sporting Schools, along with our record commitment to sports programs and facilities for women and girls through Play our Way.” “From the playground to the podium we are backing in our athletes and sports clubs at every level.” We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.
We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
