Improving mobile connectivity on Australia’s regional roads

The Albanese Government is investing $30 million to boost mobile coverage on regional and remote roads, through the National Regional Roads Australia Mobile Program. The program will fund projects that improve multi-carrier mobile coverage on highways and major roads, providing mobile connectivity at strategic locations such as rest areas and truck stops, campgrounds, service centres, EV charging stations and viewing platforms.

Better mobile coverage in these areas will improve access to services and critical information during emergencies or natural disasters, keep motorists and workers connected as they travel through regional areas, and support the tourism, agriculture and freight industries. The program is funded under the Better Connectivity Plan for Regional and Rural Australia It complements the RRAMP Pilot Programs which are being delivered by state and territory governments, with a contribution of $50 million nationally from the Australian Government.

The Government is seeking industry and public feedback on the draft program guidelines by 24 July 2026. For more information and to provide feedback, visit National Regional Roads Australia Mobile Program guidelines consultation | Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts Quotes attributable to Minister for Communications Anika Wells: “Connectivity is critical for the safety of residents and travellers when moving through regional and remote areas of this vast country.
