Upgraded boarding facilities supporting student success in the Torres Strait
Secondary students boarding at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta on Thursday Island are benefiting from modernised living and learning spaces following a $4.9 million upgrade funded by the Albanese Labor Government. The project has significantly enhanced Torres Strait Kaziw Meta’s facilities through renovations to accommodation, study and administrative areas. The works included upgrades to the Senior Girls’ and Junior Girls’ wings, the See Kee House study area, the Waiwi Meta Office and House Parent Flat.
The project also delivered a feature mural celebrating culture and community, and new signage that enhances the campus identity and sense of place. The Albanese Government’s investment recognises the important role boarding facilities play in helping students remain connected to culture and community while furthering their education. By improving accommodation and shared spaces, the project has contributed to a positive boarding experience that supports student wellbeing, safety and success.
The upgraded facilities will support current and future generations of Torres Strait students by providing an environment that promotes learning, wellbeing and connection to culture while they pursue their education on Thursday Island.
