Comments attributable to Greens spokesperson for communications, Senator Hanson-Young: “Australians are shocked and angry at the harm caused by big tech’s toxic algorithms, there is no excuse for not acting. “There is a crisis of men’s violence towards women and girls in this country and it is being fuelled by misogynistic and violent content online. “Dangerous online content has real world consequences and our young women and girls are bearing the brunt of it.

Enough is enough. “The Government knows there is a problem. They have seen the evidence and they have heard directly from parents, teachers and young people.

Now they need to do something about it. “The Greens are ready to work with the Government to make online platforms safer for everyone and we can get this important reform done quickly. “Every day the Government delays, Meta, Google and TikTok keep making money from outrage, addiction and engagement.

“The Greens’ Fix Our Feeds bill is ready to go. It would give Australians a straightforward choice about whether they use algorithmically curated feeds, rather than leaving people at the mercy of systems designed to keep them scrolling and consuming toxic content. “This is part of a much needed Digital Duty of Care on the big tech companies, so they are legally liable for the dangers on their platforms.

“Fixing our feeds means it must be a genuine opt-in. People should actively choose to be tracked and fed algorithmically curated content. They should not have to dig through settings or navigate dark patterns designed to keep them online.

“There is a clear role for the government to play here in regulating big tech to protect our children and young people and make online spaces safer for everyone and it’s time to get it done. “The choice is clear; put Australians back in control of their online lives, or continue allowing big tech’s profits to come first."
