Full fibre coming for more homes and businesses with NBN
The Albanese Government is delivering world-class connectivity to even more households and businesses, no matter where they live, through the publicly-owned NBN. More than 99 per cent of the approximately 600,000 premises still serviced by fibre-to-the-node technology will be upgraded to full-fibre connections thanks to an equity injection of up to $3 billion from the Albanese Government and a contribution of more than $800 million from NBN Co.
More than half of these homes and businesses are in regional areas. This is above and beyond the Government's original 2025 commitment to deliver full-fibre connections to more than 95 per cent of premises still on the ageing Coalition copper network. This is possible because of detailed design and construction progress made by NBN Co, which has identified efficiencies and savings in the program.
Once the final upgrade program is complete by December 2030, more than 11 million homes and businesses will be able to access multi-gigabit-capable broadband across Australia. This investment builds on the 1.5 million premises Fibre Upgrade Program already completed in December 2025. Fibre is the fastest, most reliable and resilient broadband technology available, requiring less maintenance and experiencing fewer faults than legacy copper networks.
