Have your say on Australia's radioactive waste framework

Website search The Australian Government is updating the national framework which sets the direction of radioactive waste management and disposal for the country. Led by the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency, the framework is now open for public consultation and industry, experts and other stakeholders are encouraged to have their say. Australia has been generating its own radioactive waste for more than 100 years.

It comes from making life-saving nuclear medicines, cancer treatments and research, industry and defence-related programs. “The framework underscores Albanese government’s commitment to safety and security – to the protection of people and the environment while we manage this waste which is a by-product of modern life,” Minister King said. The new Australian Radioactive Waste Management Framework is expected to be released in early 2027.

The draft framework and consultation materials are available now on the Department of Industry, Science and Resources Consultation The consultation closes on 13 November.
