The Hon Tony Burke MP

Joint media release with the Hon Tara Moriarty MLC The Snowy Valleys community is better prepared for future emergencies with the opening of the new multipurpose and evacuation centre in Tumut. The purpose-built facility received more than $13 million from the Albanese and Minns Governments through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund under the jointly funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

The facility will serve as both a regional sports and events venue and a modern Emergency and Evacuation Centre during natural disasters. The multipurpose and evacuation centre includes indoor sports courts, spectator seating, amenities, a café, storage space and parking. It will host sporting competitions, conferences and community activities throughout the year.

Equivalent in size to two basketball courts, the new multipurpose courts will support basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball, badminton and cricket training, giving the community more opportunities to stay active and play sport year-round. With the Snowy Valleys vulnerable to bushfires and other natural disasters, the centre can be quickly transformed into an emergency and evacuation centre, providing shelter and support when it is needed most.

The project delivers long-term benefits for the region by supporting emergency preparedness, recreation and community connection. Quotes attributable to Acting Minister for Emergency Management Tony Burke “The Albanese Government is proud to support projects that help communities like Snowy Valleys prepare for future emergencies, while also delivering lasting benefits every day.

“This new centre will give people in Tumut and the wider region a safe, modern place to turn to during natural disasters, including bushfires, storms and floods. “Just as importantly, it will be used year-round for sport, events and community activities, helping bring people together and strengthening local connection. “Through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, we are investing in infrastructure that supports recovery, builds resilience and gives regional communities the facilities they need for the future.” Quotes attributable to NSW Minister for Agriculture and Regional Tara Moriarty “This is a fantastic new facility for the Snowy Valleys community.

“From local sporting competitions and school activities to community events and gatherings, the centre will be a place that brings people together. “Importantly, it also provides a safe and well-equipped facility that can support residents during emergencies. “It’s great to see this project complete and ready to serve the community for many years to come.” Quotes attributable to Senator for NSW Deborah O’Neill “This fabulous Tumut multipurpose and evacuation centre is the outcome of different levels of government working together to deliver for the people of Tumut and the surrounding region.

“This facility will provide a venue of much fun and community spirit. When required, it will also be a safe place of refuge for all who need it. “I am proud to be a part of a Labor Government that recognises the increasing impact of climate events, invests in protecting our communities who are most at risk of future climate events, and delivers for regional Australia.” Quotes attributable to Snowy Valleys Council Mayor Julia Ham “We’re grateful for the support and investment from the Australian and NSW Governments, which has helped make this important community facility possible.

“The centre has been designed to serve our community in both good times and challenging times. It will provide a place for people to gather, connect and participate in activities every day, while also giving us an important facility that can support our community in the event of an emergency. “How absolutely wonderful it is to have this open.

A dream come true for many who have advocated for years.”
