Record number of Australians complete digital statutory declarations

Attorney-General’s portfolio New data reveals a record number of Australians are embracing digital Commonwealth statutory declarations available through myGov. In the 2025-26 financial year, Australians signed more than 270,000 digital statutory declarations, representing an 84% increase from the previous period. Launched by the Albanese Government in 2024, nearly 450,000 statutory declarations have now been digitally signed.

Making a statutory declaration can mean taking time off work, and even paying to have your documents witnessed at a local post office or pharmacy. Now, using myID on myGov, Australians can complete the legally binding declaration from their smartphone or computer in roughly four minutes, for free, anytime and anywhere. Australians value the efficiency and convenience of having both online and paper-based options to make statutory declarations, allowing individuals to select the method that best meets their needs and circumstances.

The digital option can be particularly helpful for Australians in regional, remote, and rural communities who previously had to travel long distances to find a witness, as well as those with limited mobility. Importantly, the digital statutory declaration process has stringent cyber security protections in place and has been designed so myGov never retains a copy of a completed declaration.

Commonwealth statutory declarations can be required in a broad range of personal matters, including visa, superannuation, employment and leave applications as well as in legal evidence. Further information, including how to create a digital Commonwealth statutory declaration, is available on the myGov website Quotes attributable to the Attorney-General, Hon Michelle Rowland MP: "The Albanese Government is focused on making everyday interactions with government simpler, faster, and easier, no matter where you live.

"That's why this Government introduced a digital option for signing Commonwealth statutory declarations. "A record number of Australians are now using the service, helping save time, money, and the need to find a witness. "In just four minutes on your phone, you can complete an online statutory declaration safely, securely, and completely free.

"We encourage all Australians needing to sign a Commonwealth statutory declaration to consider using this service."
