Criminal Code Amendment (Hate Crimes) Bill 2024

Mr BANDT (Melbourne—Leader of the Australian Greens) (19:58): I will make two points. Firstly, the two sheet of amendments, I think, were only just made available in the chamber. The minister says that some are uncontroversial amendments and others are likely to be controversial.

Had that been made clear before and had we had more than a few minutes notice of this, a different position might have been taken about moving all of these amendments together. It's disappointing that, amongst all the rhetoric about wanting cooperation across the chamber, these have been sprung on us, and people have not been given an opportunity to consider, and potentially even support, some of these amendments.

If the intention really were to get the largest majority then I think— Mr Burke interjecting— Mr BANDT: That would be preferable. Thank you. The DEPUTY SPEAKER ( Ms Claydon ): Sorry, I didn't hear that.
