CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS

Mr BIRRELL (Nicholls) (16:12): I rise today to speak on behalf of Grace Thackray, from my electorate, who was one of the many to participate in the Raise Our Voice program, which this year asked young people: 'What steps should the government take today to build a better future for young Australians?' This was Grace's response to that question: Good afternoon, parliament.

My name is Grace Thackray, I'm 18 from Yarrawonga, which is in the electorate of Nicholls in a regional part of Victoria. Did you know that nearly half of young Australians say they feel unprepared for the future? That's why the steps our government takes today matter so much.

First, education must be the top priority. We need modern classrooms, digital tools, and well supported teachers so every young person is ready for the jobs of tomorrow, no matter where they live. Second, mental health support must improve.

Too many young Australians struggle with stress and anxiety. Affordable, accessible services in schools and communities can turn survival into success. Finally, young people deserve a seat at the table.

Advisory councils and leadership programs give us a voice in shaping the policies that affect our future. If the government focuses on education, wellbeing, and youth inclusion, we can build a tomorrow where young Australians don't just hope for a better future, they live it. Thank you.

I say to you, Grace, and to all the other students from the Nicholls electorate who participated in Raise Our Voice Australia this year: thank you. Grace, thank you for your articulate statement. Your message has been heard by the people in this place, and I'm sure will be acted on by both sides of parliament.

Your message about education, mental health, and engaging and listening to young people is a message that all of us have heard, and I will do my best to continue to engage with young people around the electorate of Nicholls. Thank you very much, Grace.
