STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Dr REID (Robertson) (13:50): I have had the privilege of welcoming Squadron Leader Shaun Vaughn, an outstanding Australian from Queensland, into our parliamentary office as part of the ADF Parliamentary Program. Squadron Leader Vaughn is a medical officer and general practitioner in the Royal Australian Air Force, and he makes an exceptional contribution to the ADF as the health centre manager of Amberley Health Centre.

During his time here, he has observed the many facets of parliamentary work, from constituency advocacy to policy development and committee responsibilities. It was an opportunity to see firsthand how decisions made in this place are informed by the realities faced by our communities and how those decisions in turn shape our nation's future. In return, I joined the crew of the HMAS Canberra, where I spent time across several units gaining an appreciation of the scale, discipline and teamwork that underpin our Navy's operations.

To the commanding officer, Captain David McPherson, and the executive officer, Commander John Little: it was an honour to be aboard the Canberra. Thank you for your detailed briefings on the operational systems and diverse functions of the Canberra, which offered a fascinating insight into the capability of our Navy. The spirit of 'Canberra can' was evident—a clear reflection of the crew's dedication, teamwork and pride in service.

I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to see firsthand the skill and commitment that keeps one of Australia's most advanced maritime assets at peak readiness. I thank Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Martin of the Australian Army and Commander Nigel Paschini of the Royal Australian Navy for making this incredible program possible.
