MOTIONS

Senator DAVID POCOCK (Australian Capital Territory—Independent ACT Whip) (16:29): I seek leave to make a short statement. Leave granted. Senator DAVID POCOCK: I thank Senator Payman for bringing this motion for us to consider today.

Senator Payman's motion wouldn't be necessary if the government just complied with Senate orders. Currently the Senate is ordering documents and what we get back are no documents at all or just blacked-out pages. The government's use of PII claims has been on the rise.

Under the Keating government it was 92.5 per cent for OPDs. Under the Albanese government it has nosedived to 32.8 per cent. This particular motion appears to be an ongoing change to how we manage noncompliance with OPDs, and I think it would be appropriate for it to be the subject of an inquiry and potentially wider debate here in the Senate.

While I can't support this motion, I support what Senator Payman is seeking to achieve and hope we can force the government to actually start complying with the Senate.
