STATEMENTS BY SENATORS

Senator DOLEGA (Tasmania) (13:37): I stand in solidarity with every worker who has exercised their right to walk off the job, because they're not just fighting for themselves, they're fighting for a fair go in their workplace. In my home state of Tassie, state public sector workers, supported by the Greens and teals, continue their industrial action this week against the minority Liberal government, who have failed to present a decent offer, leaving workers no choice but to escalate their action.

Already, hundreds of workers—teachers, public servants and healthcare workers—backed by the AEU, the CPSU and HACSU have walked off the job. They've been rallying in Devonport, in Burnie and now in Launnie and in Hobart. Tasmanian education minister Jo Palmer called the school strikes 'really disappointing'.

But you know what's disappointing? Not paying your workers fairly and not recognising their contribution. Today, ABC workers, members of the CPSU and the MEAA, are striking for the first time in 20 years.

Journos, techos and production workers are fighting for a fair enterprise agreement that delivers real wage growth and secure jobs. I support ABC workers. I support members and their right to bargain for fair pay and fair conditions.

This is in stark contrast to the shadow communications minister, who today went on TV and called ABC staff a 'disgrace' and told them, 'Just take what's offered.' Shame! I say the shadow communications minister is a disgrace for attacking workers. I will always stand with workers who are prepared to strike and who are prepared to fight for a fair deal.

I encourage all workers to join your union, stand up and fight back.
