House of RepresentativesTuesday 2 June 2026

STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Mr MONCRIEFF (Hughes) (13:34): This Monday, 8 June, is a public holiday in New South Wales, which will mean a bit of well-earned time off for so many young workers across the state, and well-earned penalty rates for those that are working. And those that are working will know that they have an Albanese Labor government in Australia that is backing them and workers like them on penalty rates, backing them on pay rises and backing them on tax cuts.

They also have a Labor government that is backing them to get a home of their own. From reforming our tax system to give them a fairer crack at getting a roof over their heads to boosting supply through the Housing Australia Future Fund, we're helping young people into the market through the Help to Buy scheme and we're giving them opportunities through our five per cent deposits.

On the other side of the chamber we have a group of people that did not believe that we had an issue with housing. They didn't have a housing minister for most of the time they were in office. That is in stark contrast to what we have on this side of the House, where we are making once-in-a-generation reforms to our housing market to get young people into a home of their own.

Those opposite voted against tax cuts for young working Australians. They haven't supported pay rises. This is a consistent measure of their support for young Australians, and it shows what they believe in.

They now have an opportunity to get behind our tax cuts for working Australians. They have an opportunity to show what side of history they want to be on, and that is an opportunity that they should not pass up. It is an opportunity to show that they support young people, like we on this side of the chamber do.
