CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS
Ms FERNANDO (Holt) (09:57): I recently had the pleasure of visiting U3A Cranbourne, a wonderful local organisation based in Bowen Street, Cranbourne. U3A plays such an important role in our community by helping older Australians stay connected, active and engaged. During my visit I had the opportunity to meet with members, see their classes in action and learn more about the incredible range of activities that they offer, from art to calligraphy, knitting, crocheting, singing, playing guitar, table tennis, mosaic art, gardening and so much more.
There is really something for everyone. What really stood out to me the most was the warmth of the members and the strong sense of belonging that U3A Cranbourne has created. It was clear from the moment I arrived that this is more than just a place for classes; it is a place where people build friendships, learn new skills and support one another.
I want to thank Sue and all the members for welcoming me so warmly and showing me around, and sharing the wonderful work they do for our local Holt community. Last Saturday, I visited Dhamma Sarana Buddhist temple for their annual Vesak celebration. Vesak is one of the most important days in the Buddhist calendar, marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of Lord Buddha.
It is a time of reflection, compassion, generosity and peace. Since being elected, I have visited the temple every year for Vesak, and each year it's a special reminder of the strength, warmth and deep faith of our local Buddhist community. The temple was beautifully decorated, with families, children, monks and community members coming together in a spirit of devotion and unity.
In Holt we are proud to be home to people from many different backgrounds, faiths and cultures. Celebrations like Vesak are a powerful part of our multicultural story. They bring people together across generations and backgrounds, deepening understanding and reminding us of the shared values at the heart of our community: compassion, respect and care for one another.
I thank the monks, volunteers and organisers at Dhamma Sarana Buddhist Temple for their warm welcome, and I look forward to visiting them again. I also want to give a big shout-out to Nawa Rasa in Cranbourne West. They fed 2,000 people last Saturday, and it was absolutely amazing to be a part of the dansal there.
Thank you very much.
