STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Ms LAWRENCE (Hasluck) (16:07): Kiara College is a high school in my electorate, and it is scoring goals across many areas, with specialist programs in agriculture, music, specialised learning, STEM, performing arts and Aboriginal engagement through the Clontarf Academy, Shooting Stars and Follow the Dream. Another subject that they have a specialist program in is basketball.

The senior boys' team finished the season as North of the River champions. I'm pleased to report to the House—and especially to my friend, the member for Tangney—that, last week, the Kiara team won the state grand final against former champions Willetton Senior High School by nine points after an extremely hard-fought match. Congratulations to the team and to their coaches, Jono Ryan and Kurt Slabolepszy, who have obviously done an amazing job.

The specialist basketball course at Kiara does more than create a championship team, however. It also offers students the chance to develop their skills not only as players but also as referees and coaches, thereby enabling them to become lifelong participants in the basketball industry. Students have also got the opportunity to graduate from Kiara College with a certificate II in sport and recreation.

The specialist basketball course at Kiara College, which the students have placed on the map this week, is representative of the many wonderful programs that are delivered at the school. I congratulate Principal Innocent Chicwama and the whole staff in their efforts for the extraordinary culture and morale-boosting performance, particularly of the basketball team but also of the programs overall.
