Mr GOSLING (Solomon) (16:16): Last week I met with Georgie Cauchi from Palmerston, part of my electorate of Solomon, who was in Canberra for Bowel Cancer Australia's Call on Canberra campaign. In 2022, at just 30 years old, Georgie was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. Most people would hear that and think that 30 is too young.
That is exactly why Georgie is sharing her story. Her message is simple: you're never too young for bowel cancer. Too many young Australians assume it only affects older people.
Too often symptoms are dismissed, explained away or ignored, but one in eight Australians diagnosed with bowel cancer is under the age of 50. That's why it's very important to know the warning signs. Blood in your poo should never be ignored.
No-one knows your body better than you do, so, if something doesn't feel right, get it checked. Talk to your GP. Please don't be embarrassed to have that conversation.
It could save your life. With so many clinics now in Darwin, Palmerston and, indeed, around the country, and with our bulk-billing reforms providing bulk-billed health care, there is no excuse. Cost is not an issue.
I really want to thank Georgie for her courage in sharing her story and for being such a strong advocate for others.
