Mr SOON (Banks) (16:22): On 12 June, it was my pleasure to officially open the Peakhurst Park Community Centre alongside representatives from Georges River Council and many community leaders. The new centre is a facility for the whole community, undertaking major renovations at the former Peakhurst Scout Hall, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, including replacing the roof and drainage, replacing the internal fit-out and modernising the whole structure.
In addition to delivering a community facility, the project supported 65 jobs over the course of its construction and will support the creation of 10 new jobs on an ongoing basis in the local area. Importantly, in 2022, I promised the local Nepalese Australian community that a Labor government would help deliver a Nepalese community space in my electorate of Banks.
This project delivers on that promise to a community that continues to grow and contribute significantly in my electorate. The delivery of a permanent office space for the Nepalese Australian community was the basis of the federal government investing into this project, and I look forward to seeing the programs and the support that the Nepalese Australian Association is able to deliver with this space alongside the many, many other activities this centre will host for our local area.
