STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Mrs PHILLIPS (Gilmore) (16:26): I'm reading this on behalf of Phoenix Bailie, who joins me here as a year-10 student undertaking work experience from my electorate of Gilmore. Phoenix says: 'I'm incredibly grateful to be afforded the opportunity to experience a week in the life of a politician. And honestly, it's way more exciting than Snapchat and TikTok.

I feel lucky and proud to live in a country with the freedoms and diversity we have in Australia. Acceptance of diversity and equal rights are values I'm passionate about. Our differences don't divide us; they make us a more vibrant and exciting country.

When we open ourselves to other people's perspectives instead of judging them, we build a stronger, more cohesive society for all. I know personally what it's like to feel misunderstood or to feel like you don't quite fit the mould. My first instinct used to be to step back and hide, but I've learned, with the right support, you can step forward and make your voice heard.

The Australia that I believe in embraces our differences but stays united by shared values. I hope to be a member of parliament. Until then, I'll keep working on building a future defined by equality, compassion and respect.

Speaking of building futures, I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Prime Minister. As someone whose generation is already experiencing dread about homeownership, seeing a genuine focus on making ownership affordable for young people gives us hope. It's nice to know someone has our backs for when we finally leave home.
