Ms LANDRY (Capricornia—Chief Nationals Whip) (16:30): I rise today to share my deep gratitude to the Rockhampton Orchid Society, a group that has been a vibrant part of the Central Queensland community since 1955. It was a true honour to be re-elected as their patron at the society's recent annual general meeting. This society is truly going from strength to strength.
They celebrated a massive milestone last year with their 70th anniversary show at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion, attracting over 1,150 visitors. More recently, the 2026 autumn show featured an array of stunning orchids that garnered many compliments from visitors despite the challenging weather conditions in the weeks leading up to the event. One of the great joys of being involved with the society has been discovering just how exciting it is to grow orchids myself.
There is something very special about spending time in my greenhouse, watching these beautiful plants develop and waiting for that moment when a new bloom finally appears. The members of the society have been very generous with their advice on shade, misting and fertilising, and their passion is infectious. It has made the experience even more rewarding and given me a deeper appreciation for the care and patience that goes into every orchid on display.
I look forward to seeing everyone again, after a little winter hibernation, at the spring show in September, when the orchids will once again be in full bloom. My thanks go to the entire committee for their tireless dedication to this wonderful hobby. It is a privilege to represent you.
