STATEMENTS BY SENATORS

Senator POLLEY (Tasmania) (13:58): The Albanese Labor government is taking long-overdue action to improve care, support and recognition for Australian women experiencing menopause and perimenopause. A key measure is the creation of a new Medicare support for menopause and perimenopause health assessments, allowing women to have longer, more focused conversations with their GPs about symptoms, treatment options and broader health risks.

The government is also funding training for health professionals and the development of Australia's first national clinical guidelines for perimenopause and menopause so women can receive more consistent, informed and evidence based care no matter where they live. That's what a Labor government does. Thankyou to Mel Knuckey for sharing her story on Sunday and leading change in this often overlooked area of women's health.

Importantly, the Albanese government is expanding the national network of endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics so that they can also provide specialist support for menopause and perimenopause. Finally, the government has actually listened to Australians and is providing the health care that they deserve. I want to thank Minister Mark Butler and Assistant Minister Rebecca White for their groundbreaking work and also the senators here in this chamber.

The PRESIDENT: The time for statements has expired.
