Senator STEWART (Victoria) (13:44): I rise to speak on the Albanese government's expansion of the Commonwealth paid prac payment. You shouldn't have to choose between paying the bills and graduating. That's a principle this government backs with real money, not just hot air.

It's already easing the load for student teachers, nurses, midwives and social workers. A few weeks ago, the Prime Minister announced this support will extend to 10 further disciplines, including clinical psychology, physiotherapy, speech pathology, paramedics, audiologists, podiatrists, radiographers, pharmacists and occupational therapists. That is an incredible list of people.

Eligible students will receive around $340 a week to help cover food and transport while they are on placement. This reform matters to every student but particularly students travelling in regional Australia. In electorates like Mallee, where I grew up, and Nicholls, an allied health shortage is not just data or a policy paper; it's a family waiting months to see a physio or driving hours just to see a psychologist.

Paid prac removes a real barrier that is stopping students from finishing their studies and going on to build careers in regions that need them most. Expanding paid prac sends a strong message. Labor understands that essential health services are more than just saving lives.

If we look at something like a hip replacement, the surgery itself is essential and life changing, but it's allied health professionals who get people back to living their lives: back to work, back to gardening or back to their grandchild's birthday party. The Albanese government values the critical work of these health professionals, and Australians need these health professionals in our communities.

It's why we're delivering real help to get them through their degrees and into the jobs where they can make a real difference in everyday Australians' lives.
