STATEMENTS BY SENATORS

Senator POLLEY (Tasmania) (13:58): Recently, the Labor Party celebrated its 50th ALP national conference in Adelaide. The Australian Labor Party, with the Albanese Labor government, has reaffirmed its core Labor principles: if you work, you deserve fair pay, you deserve dignity and you deserve a secure retirement. For too long, workers in this country, particularly those under the age of 18, have been excluded from the superannuation guarantee, unless they met limited hours base requirements.

This has meant that too many young people, often those starting their very first job and learning the value of work, have missed out on retirement savings they have earned and the compounded interest associated with superannuation. This reform is especially significant for young workers in industries where the SDA union have had a long and strong campaign and a persistent voice to give young workers what they deserve: access to superannuation.
