PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATION

Senator ALLMAN-PAYNE (Queensland) (19:00): I'm not going to talk for very long, Pete, because I'm going to be the one who cries a lot. Every single thing that every one of our team has said about you is 100 per cent correct and more. I didn't know you very well either when I came into this parliament.

I don't think I even really got to know you very well until the last two years. I really appreciate the way you took me to Heron, a place that's in my backyard that I'd never been to, despite having lived in Gladstone for 13 years. I really want you to take me back there one day when I can actually get in the water.

Senator Whish-Wilson: Absolutely. Senator ALLMAN-PAYNE: I also really appreciate, as other people have said, your courage in saying what is sometimes hard to say. As the party room chair, sometimes that makes my job really tricky, but it's always been important and it's been important for us as a team to think about and work through and reflect on.

So thank you for being prepared to raise those things. I really appreciate the way in which you have fought for issues of justice and social justice, because, in many ways, that was what brought me to the Greens. I think it's being part of this team and working with people like you that has actually increased my love for nature as well.

I spent a lot of time doing things that weren't that, and so I've appreciated seeing those things through your eyes and the eyes of other people in our team too, who really care about that stuff. I think I'm one of the few Greens who's never been to Tasmania other than for Greens meetings. I've been six times over the last decade and it's either been a committee hearing or a Greens meeting.

I absolutely would love to come and visit it properly with you. Nat, it's been a real pleasure meeting you through Pete, and I hope we get to see each other more in the future. We've been enjoying sitting here in the chamber looking at videos of camper trailers on silent, and I'm hoping to be the one who leads the way.

I can't wait till you get yours, and I hope that you hit the road and come up to Queensland and come through Gladstone. Darin and I would love very much to have you. Finn and Bronte, I don't think we've met, but you have such an amazing dad and I'm so glad that you get to have him back and see him more.

I think the other thing that I feel like we have in common, Pete, is that we're the only two members of the party room that have a two-flight trip to get home. I know what that means in terms of the extra time that you're away from your family, and so I really understand why you want to be around them more. I'm not going to say any more, because I feel like everyone else has said it, and it's five past seven and Barb still needs a turn.

But I really, really have loved getting to know you, Pete, and I really hope that we get to spend more time with each other when you're out of this place. Senator Whish-Wilson: You will.
