Ms JARRETT (Brisbane) (13:44): This year alone, 45 Australian women have had their lives tragically cut short at the hands of violence by men. Behind every number is someone's mum, sister, aunt or friend whose life was stolen and whose loved ones are left behind. We are facing a domestic violence crisis in this country.

Tragically, family and domestic violence remains the leading reason why Australian women and children find themselves homeless. We know that one of the main reasons they are homeless is because they don't have a safe place to go in a way that they can leave the violent relationship. It's simply not good enough.

Recognising the impact that these challenges have on women, we announced a $308 million investment to deliver 448 new crisis and transitional homes in Australia. These homes are going to support around 22,000 women and children at some of the most vulnerable periods in their lives. These homes are far more than bricks and mortar.

They will provide not only a safe place to stay but also the services and support women and children need to recover from the trauma, regain their independence and rebuild their lives with confidence and dignity. That's what meaningful housing delivery looks like. It's in stark contrast to those opposite, who in nine years built only nine crisis and transitional homes across the country.

It's a disgrace. Together, we can build a nation where every woman and child is safe, supported and empowered to thrive.
