CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS
Mr LAXALE (Bennelong) (10:09): In 1876, Lane Cove Public School opened with just 13 students, and last week the school celebrated their 150th anniversary. It was such an honour to join their celebrations alongside Principal Terry McKinnon, New South Wales Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car and current and former members of the school community to mark this very special day, and there was plenty on show.
The original 1876 classroom displayed old photos, uniforms, badges, trophies and documents. A centenary time capsule from 1976 was unearthed, with items and stories that have preserved the school's rare history. The P&C ran a cake stall and a barbecue and sold commemorative tea towels and aprons.
Special alumni returned as well. Peter Overton from Nine News returned to Lane Cove for the celebration. He was a student and school captain 55 years ago.
Peter reunited with John Notley, who is a lifetime school P&C member who is now over 90 years old, and a special video from the one and only Nicole Kidman—a former student—was played in which she shared her personal stories about her beloved Lane Cove Public School. Today, 680 students are enrolled, with 48 per cent of those from a non-English-speaking background and with 54 different languages being spoken in family homes.
To the present and past families, teachers and students of Lane Cove Public School: congratulations. Thank you for being the reason that this school continues to thrive. Whilst it was an honour to celebrate such a huge milestone, I'm deeply saddened to share some local news.
Last week, I learnt of the passing of Domenico 'Mick' Olivieri. Mick was a beloved member of the Ryde community who will be sorely missed. Mick was cherished, respected and admired in all areas of his life.
You'd often see Mick on the sewing machine as one of the expert tailors at Top Ryde Tailoring, which is a business he started 66 years ago. But his life wasn't only work; he gave back to his community as well. For more than 60 years, Mick devoted his time to the Lady of Grace Fraternity by serving as both a committee member and Treasurer.
He led the Rosary Group at St Anthony's Catholic Church every Monday, where he shared his passion for faith and prayer with the parish. Mick was widely known for always giving a helping hand. He organised countless fundraising initiatives and worked tirelessly to bring people together.
He offered support to anyone in need, whether it was towards fellow locals in Bennelong or disadvantaged groups outside of Australia. I wish to extend my respects to the Olivieri family, who I know will sorely miss him. He leaves behind his wife of over 65 years, Giuseppina Olivieri, as well as their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
