QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE

Mr ALBANESE (Grayndler—Prime Minister) (14:47): I thank the member for Kooyong for her question. It goes to the AFL and NRL, which are two sports that are fantastic sports and can bring great joy to Australians—also the occasional disappointment, some of which can last for 43 years! When it comes to the legislation that is before the parliament at the moment, one of the things it does, and I would hope that there would be some acknowledgement in it, is that clubs, particularly NRL, which currently have sponsorship on their jumpers such as my club, South Sydney, which has Crown; the Brisbane Broncos, which have Star Casino; or Canterbury-Bankstown, which has Laundy Hotels—indeed something like 15 clubs are going to lose revenue as a result of the legislation that is before the parliament if it is carried with amendments next week.

There's also the case that grounds—there's been PointsBet Stadium and a range of grounds as well. So, on top of the issue, which I know has exercised a great deal of discussion about advertising on TV or radio, if you have a stadium that is named and sponsored—such as the one in the member for Mackellar's electorate for quite a while—by a betting organisation, that represents not however many an hour but 24/7 advertising.

One of the things that this legislation will do is remove that. We have made it clear in putting this forward that the AFL, to be fair, do not have sponsorship of betting organisations on their jumpers; they have a different internal code. But for the National Rugby League, this will have a major impact on the clubs.

We've made it clear that is a really important reform. I do make this point as well about the AFL and the NRL: my club runs Souths Cares, which runs Indigenous programs around rural areas. AFL clubs will sponsor local junior footy as well.

There's been a massive expansion of women in AFLW and NRLW and that's a fantastic thing. One of the things we need for social cohesion, in my view, is more team sports, kids getting off their devices and onto the fields. The NRL and AFL will play an important role in that.
