Crimes and Other Legislation Amendment (Omnibus No. 1) Bill 2026

Senator GREEN (Queensland—Assistant Minister for Tourism, Assistant Minister for Pacific Island Affairs and Assistant Minister for Northern Australia) (10:19): Senator Cash, everything you've stated is on the public record. I understand you're seeking to do that for yourself, but there's nothing that I can add to what you've said. Can I just use this opportunity though to remind the Senate and all senators that the prosecution to which Senator Cash is referring is currently ongoing.

I made mention of this yesterday. We certainly should be scrutinising this legislation before us, but I would just caution senators on using this opportunity to politicise a current prosecution in any way. I'm not suggesting that Senator Cash is veering into that territory just yet, but it's very important that we concentrate and scrutinise this legislation.

I certainly am cautious about politicising a prosecution which is currently underway.
