STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Mr CALDWELL (Fadden—Opposition Chief Whip) (13:54): The Labor government has reached the trifecta of housing failures: fewer homes, higher rents and confidence in the market completely smashed. The great Australian dream under this Labor government has, sadly, turned into a nightmare. On every metric that you can use to measure their policies, they are a failure.

Let's put to one side the 1.2 million homes that they are clearly not going to deliver during their term in office. Labor loves talking about its Housing Australia Future Fund, but so does the Auditor-General, and do you know what the Auditor-General has told us? Against their 40,000 home HAFF and accord facility program, just 1,432 homes were delivered to May, but—guess what?—only 762 of those were actually constructed.

Opposition members interjecting— Mr CALDWELL: Cue the awes, alright. That's outrageous. In the March quarter, dwelling commencements have dropped by 11 per cent, and, for renters, Labor's housing crisis arrives every week when the rent is due.

Did you know that at the moment 33 per cent of the median income is used on rent? That is completely outrageous. Sadly only the coalition will be the ones to restore homeownership as the centrepiece of the Australian dream.

Step No. 1 is winding back Labor's toxic taxes.
