STATEMENTS ON INDULGENCE

Mr ALBANESE (Grayndler—Prime Minister) (14:00): Australians have been saddened to hear reports over the weekend of the devastating earthquake in eastern Indonesia, with at least 53 people reported killed and many more than that injured. On behalf of the Australian government and people, I extend my sympathies to all those affected by this tragic event. We stand with the Indonesian government and its people at this sad and difficult time, as we have always done and we always will do.

Today also marks 81 years of Indonesian independence. The Indonesian people's heroic struggle for independence was one of the most momentous turning points of the 20th century, and Australians are rightly proud that we were among the first to recognise the establishment of Indonesia as a sovereign independent nation. Then, as today, Australia's peace, security and stability are dependent on the security of our region and, in turn, on a united, stable and sovereign Indonesia.

To us, no relationship is more important, and that's why my first bilateral visits after being elected, first in 2022 and then in 2025, were to our great northern neighbour. It's why earlier this year I signed the Australia-Indonesia Treaty on Common Security, the Jakarta treaty, with my friend President Prabowo. That treaty makes clear that the best way to secure the peace and stability of our region is by acting together, and it reaffirms the force of the 2006 Lombok treaty that Australia unwaveringly respects Indonesia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

I note that this is a bipartisan position across this parliament. This historic agreement was only possible because the bonds between our nations are stronger and surer than ever. I extend best wishes and hearty congratulations to our neighbour on this anniversary.
