Mr BOYCE (Flynn) (13:33): Labor's firearm laws were rushed through parliament in response to the Bondi terrorist attack, despite there being no evidence linking licensed firearm owners to that event. Farmers, sport shooters, collectors and other law-abiding firearm owners should not be punished for the actions of criminals. They follow strict licensing requirements, contribute to their communities and play an important role in regional Australia, particularly in pest management and agricultural production.
Importantly, the interim report of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion found no gap in the previous legal framework that prevented authorities from responding to the Bondi attack. That finding raises serious questions about the justification for Labor's changes. I support the national Firearms Legislation Amendment (Repealing Unfair Gun Laws) Bill 2026, which would restore Commonwealth firearms and importation laws to their previous position and abolish the government's stalled national gun buyback scheme.
The bill would also provide certainty for firearms dealers and small businesses that have been left carrying the costs and uncertainty created by these changes. Let me be clear. This bill does not alter the prohibition on hate symbols or existing background check requirements.
This is about fairness, common sense and ensuring law-abiding Australians are not unfairly targeted for crimes that they did not commit. I'll continue to support responsible firearm owners, regional communities and small business.
