Ms CLUTTERHAM (Sturt) (13:47): Labor is the party of superannuation. In 2024 the Albanese Labor government passed the superannuation objective legislation to strengthen Australia's world-leading and much envied retirement income system. This legislated objective for superannuation means Australians can have confidence in the super system.

The objective is clear, purposeful and to the benefit of all Australians. The objective of super is to preserve savings, to deliver income for a dignified retirement alongside government support in an equitable and sustainable way. Any future changes to super legislation must be judged against that objective.

We are wholeheartedly committed to protecting and strengthening the super system so it helps build a stronger and more resilient economy and delivers a dignified retirement for more Australians including women, who too often retire with less super than men—in large part because they take time out of the workforce to raise children. This unavoidable work, raising children, should not eventuate into a retirement savings penalty.

On this government's watch, it won't. If you care for a child—born or adopted—and you receive government funded parental leave, you will receive super at the 12 per cent super guarantee rate because you deserve a dignified retirement too. Labor will always act to prevent any proposal to undermine the superannuation system or to challenge its sustainability or equity.
