House of RepresentativesMonday 7 September 2026

STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Mr TEHAN (Wannon—Manager of Opposition Business) (13:57): Sometimes in this place we need to be reminded of our own words. The then leader of the opposition, now prime minister, said before the 2022 election: 'What I want to do is make sure that, if I am elected prime minister, I will operate a government with a big dose of Australian sunshine. The cult of secrecy and a culture of cover up need to end.' Well, let's see whether he is true to his word this question time.

Housing is in freefall. Rents are going through the roof. What we'd like to know is: what did the Treasury modelling actually say?

If you believe in transparency and letting the sun shine in then, of course, you would release the modelling. You would say, 'Here it is for everyone to see.' But I've got a feeling we're not going to get the answer that we want, and guess what they'll do: they'll blame the algorithm. Well, what I want to say is: we want the 'Albo-rithm'.

Deceive, disguise, cover up and cloud—that's all he does.
