STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Ms STANLEY (Werriwa—Government Whip) (16:01): On Saturday night I gathered with many Austral residents to remember those in our community who've been affected by the Nepal and Tibet floods. South-west Sydney is home to many people who have family or their origins in the region that has been so devastated by the natural disaster. The candlelight vigil was organised by the Austral Nepalese Community Club and the Federation of Nepalese Community Associations of Australia.

The vigil was attended by many locals from Austral and beyond. It was also attended by my parliamentary colleagues Nathan Hagarty and Karishma Kaliyanda. We lit candles and observed a minute's silence as we came together in prayer, solidarity and hope, remembering those in Nepal and Tibet who've lost their lives or are still missing in the area.

We know that there are more than 30 Australians unaccounted for in the region, and families in our local area are waiting for news of loved ones. I, with our community, continue to hope that there will be more miraculous rescues, and I acknowledge everyone who's looking for the survivors. As with any disaster, we see so many go towards danger to support those affected.

The Australian government has committed over $11 million for urgent disaster response. I send my support to everyone in our community touched by this horrific disaster.
