Treasury Laws Amendment (Strengthening Accountability for Tax Adviser Misconduct and Other Measures) Bill 2026

Senator DEAN SMITH (Western Australia) (18:17): I'll just turn to a different theme. The government has previously rushed through tax legislation. The consequence of that rushed legislation was a tax on widows and, it was revealed, also a hidden tax on super.

That legislation had the benefit of just a two-day inquiry. This legislation will have no inquiry at all, and the government voted against Senator Canavan's amendment that would have provided for an inquiry into this bill. What's the government's justification for blocking a standard Senate inquiry into this bill and its various elements?
