Ms KARA COOK (Bonner) (13:37): I want my three kids and every kid in Australia to be safe online, and that's why I am so proud that today the Albanese Labor government has announced consultation for our world-leading digital duty of care. We want to put the onus on big tech to make their platforms safer, because our kids should not be commodities for big-tech companies.

Big tech will also be required to protect under-18s from harmful content around eating disorders, hostile ideas about women and gender equality, content around pornography, content that glorifies crime or life-endangering stunts and, finally, content that causes serious mental health distress, including abuse and bullying. Labor also wants to give Australians more control over their feeds through 'My Feed, My Way'—the choice to opt in or out of the algorithm.

Australia led the world with our social media minimum age laws. Now Labor is leading again. Our message is simple: if you profit from Australians using your platform, you have a responsibility to keep them safe.

Labor will continue to lead the world when it comes to our kids' safety online. Today is the next step.
