Mr VENNING (Grey) (13:39): Labor has delivered a trifecta of failures on housing. For those opposite who need Ooshies to help them count, 'trifecta' is three: fewer homes, higher rents and confidence in the market smashed. That is Labor's housing legacy.

Australians need around 240,000 new homes a year. Labor is delivering just 173,000. And, while Australians desperately need more homes, builders are going broke.

Almost 13,000 construction businesses have become insolvent since Labor came to office. That is around 60 businesses every single week. Then there are the surging rents.

They have surged almost 25 per cent since Labor came to office, while wages have grown just 16 per cent. What's Labor's answer to this? More taxes.

You cannot tax your way out of a housing crisis. It is solved by supply—something this government just does not understand. While confidence has also been smashed, new home lending has fallen, while dwelling values have dropped across our major cities.

Labor has made housing more expensive to build and harder to afford. The coalition's approach is simple: less migration, more homes; less red tape, more housing infrastructure.
