CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS
Ms WELLS (Lilley—Minister for Sport and Minister for Communications) (16:30): It's been a fortnight full of football victories for Wavell State High School, a Rugby League School of Excellence located in my electorate of Lilley. On 26 August, the mighty Wavell Warriors launched an incredible comeback win against the reigning national champions, Keebra Park, to take out the Allan Langer Trophy, Queensland's premier elite schoolboy rugby league competition.
With four minutes remaining, Wavell turned an 18-12 deficit into a 22-18 win to take the top prize. And then last week the Warriors went on to defeat St Brendan's College in Yeppoon to take out the Queensland schoolboy state title, the Phil Hall Cup. Wavell proved too strong for the opposition, running out to a 32-0 victory.
I'd like to wish the team, and coach Phil Stanley, all the best of luck for their shot at the national final on 16 September against Endeavour Sports High School. In other sporting news, last week I was honoured to help celebrate 60 years of bowls, volunteering, friendship and community service at Everton Park Bowls and Community Club. The success and longevity of any club is often determined by its ability to adapt and evolve with the times.
That evolution saw the club change its name, in 2005, to the Everton Park Bowls and Community Club, reflecting its wider role as a community venue. The success of that move has seen the club's wider membership grow to nearly 1,200 members today. We know that bowls clubs, particularly, have faced special challenges that have seen many of them close in recent years.
This club, however, continues to go from strength to strength and will be here for many years to come. A special shout-out to club patron Brian Williams, club patroness Marie Webber and club chairman Patrick Murphy for all their hard work making the club's month-long celebration a memorable one. I would urge all members of the Everton Park community to get along to the club's family open day from 12 noon on Sunday 20 September.
Spring has officially sprung on Brisbane's north side, with the festival season well under way. The Geebung Street Party on 30 August saw thousands of northsiders enjoy the warm weather, the good music and the great food. And fingers are crossed for another perfect day in Lilley this weekend with the Nundah Festival set to kick off on Sunday, celebrating with food, live music, entertainment, stalls, bands and rides.
