CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS

Mr REBELLO (McPherson) (17:08): I rise today to recognise some of the fantastic people and organisations that I've had the pleasure of spending time with across the southern Gold Coast in recent weeks. At Elanora State School I found myself in the firing line for a very good cause—getting covered in slime as part of the school's fundraising efforts. The students certainly enjoyed themselves, probably a little too much, and I was very happy to play my part in supporting their school community.

Thank you to David Chessell, the P&C president, for the invitation. To my dismay, it appears that this may now be an annual event. At Currumbin RSL, I joined local veterans from the subbranch for a relaxed catch-up.

It provided a welcoming space for current and former serving members and their families to connect, to share stories and to support one another. It was, as always, a privilege to spend time with those who have served their country. I acknowledge today that we have Luke spending time in my office through the Australian Defence Force parliamentary exchange program.

I specifically thank Lauren Darcy, the veteran engagement officer at Currumbin RSL, for hosting the weekly catch-up. The main topic of conversation was that veterans were incensed at this government's proposal to cap their access to allied health. I also had the pleasure of attending Mudgeeraba Special School's biennial concert.

Inspired by the magic of Broadway, the performance showcased the confidence, creativity and determination of students. Their faces said everything about how much the performance meant to them. I congratulate every student, teacher, staff member and family member who made the night possible.

I thank in particular principal Renee Zhu and deputy principal Steve Dowlan for inviting me and for their genuine dedication to these incredible young people. Another very special milestone was the 100th anniversary of St Augustine's at Currumbin Waters. I was honoured to join Principal John Cameron and the school community for its centenary mass, celebrated with Archbishop Shane Mackinlay.

It was an extraordinary milestone and a testament to the generations of students, families, teachers and parishioners who have helped to shape the St Augustine's community. I have every confidence that St A's will continue its proud tradition of service, education and contribution to our community for generations to come. I also joined Steve and Cath Edgar, from Clubs for a Cause, for Walking with Mates, which brought our community together to raise awareness of mental health.

Sadly, suicide continues to take far too many Australians from their families, friends and communities. The walk encouraged important conversations, helped reduce stigma and reminded everyone of a simple but powerful message: no-one has to walk alone. Finally, I caught up with Paul Davies, the CEO of NRMA Parks and Resorts, and the team in Coolangatta, who support almost 60 holiday parks and resorts across Australia.

It was great to hear about their work and to meet them.
