CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS
Ms AMBIHAIPAHAR (Barton) (17:23): I would like to congratulate Hurstville Public School, which recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. As an alumna of this brilliant school, it was such a great day of community spirit and going down memory lane, and such a festive celebration. This school is older than Federation.
It's the school where I learned to play soccer, where I became a flutist and where I met my husband, Shamil, for the first time. Hurstville Public School represents everything that I'm proud about in the electorate of Barton. It's diverse, it has a strong sense of community and it has determination to serve, to learn and to strive.
To the principal, Mark Steed, thank you so much for your leadership and for your commitment to the students, their families, the teachers and staff. To the P&C, thank you for your tireless work to make this such a successful celebration. Congratulations to Hurstville Public School for 150 years of shaping generations of students and helping them discover their own path to success.
Too many women in my community of Barton have been left out of the conversation about their own health. The Select Committee on Women's Health is inviting people to share their experiences of the health system, and I want my electorate and every community within it to be heard. I will make a submission that puts the experiences of local women front and centre, particularly women from multicultural communities, whose voices are too often missing.
In many families, women's health and reproductive health are difficult to discuss. That silence can leave women without the words, information or confidence to ask for the care they actually really need. We can change that by speaking up together.
If you are willing, share your story with me. It can remain anonymous, but it will help ensure our community is represented and our health system reflects the women it serves. I look forward to making our health system work much better for you.
