QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE

Senator FARRELL (South Australia—Minister for Trade and Tourism, Special Minister of State and Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate) (14:08): I thank the senator for her first supplementary question. There's no doubt that children can be exposed to harmful content online, and it's not only on social media. That's why we are acting to deliver the digital duty of care and we're now seeking feedback from digital platforms, industry bodies, civil society organisations and advocates on the draft laws, with legislation to be introduced to parliament later this year.

The duty of care goes beyond social media to ensure children are protected from harmful content and features. This includes on chatboxes and gaming platforms, apps and messaging platforms. Under the duty, these services will be required to protect under-18s from design features that have a negative behavioural impact, like addictive features, or those that can have an effect on a young person's self-esteem.
