CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS

Mr THOMPSON (Herbert) (10:34): I rise today to recognise one of the most uplifting events recently held in Townsville, the Challenge Games. These games are about far more than ribbons, results or crossing the finish line. They are about courage, inclusion and determination of remarkable young people who refuse to be defined by the challenges they face.

Every child who competed deserves admiration. For some, simply being at the starting line took enormous courage. Every race, every throw, every jump and every new experience represented a personal victory.

These children show us what resilience truly looks like. They adapt, persevere and keep going, inspiring everyone fortunate enough to witness their journey. But no child makes that journey alone.

Today, I acknowledge the parents and the carers whose love is consistent and often unseen. They advocate, support and encourage their children every step of the way, even through the toughest of days. I also recognise siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, therapists, support staff, coaches, volunteers and community organisations, whose care and commitment help these young people reach their full potential.

In particular, I want to pay tribute to the founder of the Challenge Games, Lynne. Through her vision, passion and decades of dedication, Lynne has created opportunities for generations of young people to participate, achieve and shine. The Challenge Games stand as a remarkable legacy of her commitment to inclusion and empowerment, and Townsville is a better community because of her work.

This is something I understand personally through my own family's journey, with Emery. I've seen how everyday things many of us barely notice can become significant challenges. I've also witnessed the extraordinary courage of a child who meets those challenges every day with her determination, character and heart.

That experience teaches you that progress can't always be measured by a stopwatch or recorded on a scoreboard. Sometimes, progress is joining in. Sometimes, it is something new.

Sometimes it is simply finding the strength to have another go. This is the true spirit of the Challenge Games. To every young competitor, Townsville sees you, I see you, and we are proud of you.

You are strong, capable and valued, and our community is better because you're a part of it. The medals one day may be tucked away, and the applause may fade, but the example set by these incredible children will remain with all of us lucky enough to witness it. Their courage, determination and spirit are an inspiration to us all.
